We would like to say a huge “Thank You!” to everyone who participated in this year’s BUMMIT
BUMMIT is part of the University’s RAG (Raising and Giving) society, which raises money for local and international charities every year. BUMMIT is a hitchhiking adventure, where participants travel to a specific destination by hitchhiking or “bumming” lifts – hence the name! Established as a one-off trip in 2003, the event has grown every year and is now internationally recognised. Participants are permitted to use public transport, but the spirit of the event is to get lifts from drivers on their way. All the students taking part wear a bright coloured hoodie with details on, and travel in small groups. Each student is expected to raise a minimum of £250 sponsorship.
This year the destination was Riga, the capital of Latvia, with Wroclaw in Poland as the secret mid-point meeting place. Over 200 University students participated, and it looks like a fantastic time was had by everyone who took part!
BUMMIT 2016/2017 raised a fantastic £57,140.47!
This year YWCA Yorkshire were fortunate enough to be selected as one of the beneficiaries of the money raised from the trip, along with 4 other charities: Femme International, St Wilfrid’s Centre, Neurocare and Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball. The money raised will be divided between the charities.
This money will make a real difference the women, children and families we support, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the BUMMIT participants, organisers, and everyone who gave them a lift!
